Douro Wine Trivia !?!?!

Post by Roy Hersh »

Which is the ONLY red grape from the Douro ... which actually has red pulp?

If you need to email someone or check Google, don't bother.

Even Frederick is going to be scratching his head with this one! :D

I know from a similar discussion on another board, but I won't spoil the fun, only say that Noval grows the grape, which is otherwise grown in some surrounding areas up to Galicia.

It has to be Sousão (vinhão in Minho). This grape is the only portuguese grape with red Pulp.
Nowadays there is another grape planted in Douro, wich is Alicante Bouschet, there has the same particularity, but it's not Portuguese

Apart from its origin, I associate Alicante Bouschet with the Alentejo, so it comes as a surprise to me that it's grown in the Douro. Do elaborate, João. Any particular producers?

Well, i found that some Alicante Bouschet is beeing planted and already producing in Douro Superior.
I was at D.O.C (fine restaurant in the heart of douro) when Luis Soares Duarte (Infantado, Gouvyas, etc) came to our table with a new project that he has been invited. He was bringing some new samples of a wine just to test some oak brands. The wine was made from Alicante Bouschet.
This will be a new producer in Douro, in a quick future
