Production of Madeira is limited. Remaining stocks of wines produced before 1960 are dwindling. As the demand from enthusiastic consumers increase, so do the replacement costs. Oidium Tuckeri hit the Island in 1851 and four years later had reduced the vineyards by some 97%. Prior to its arrival the annual average production had been almost 12,000 pipes, but by 1855 the yield was 36 pipes. The pipe was about 56 dozen bottles equivalent. Following extensive replanting, but reduced from former times, production advanced again. Reserves were buildt up. Then in 1872 phylloxera struck. Although costly and demoralising, production was less seriously affected. By 1883 the pest was almost under control, with grafted vines and several approved hybrids appearing.
