For The Love Of Port

A CA-based specialty wine broker sent me a half dozen pages of wines offered and paired with specific dishes and desserts. I won't bother to mention them as I doubt almost anyone has heard of them. Please realize in reading what I will type from their offering "verbatim" that this has no reflection on the producer of the Ports mentioned in this offering:

GRAHAM'S CENTENNIAL PORT GIFT PACK

Portugal is renowned around the world for producing some of the world's finest Port wine. (Roy's note: I wanted to write or call them and ask, "can you please tell me where on earth, better Port is made than in Portugal itself, the birthplace of Port wine?" but that would be too snarky.)For the resident Port aficionado, no other gift will satiate his or her palate quite like the Graham's Centennial Gift Pack. This holiday season, W &J Graham's is offering a rare centennial collection of aged tawny Ports (10, 20, 30 and 40 Year) in an exclusive hand-crafted leather case. At a suggested retail price of $520, only 75 will be available for purchase.

So, how many of you are lining up to purchase your gift pack @ $520 per? Am I crazy or can you buy all four of these Tawny Ports for about $300 USD today? If so, that hand crafted leather case must be pretty darn nice.

Yeah, that's pretty steep for just the wine. Though honestly, if the leather case is sturdy enough for re-use as a travel container (doubtful) it might be worth it.

Figure $25 for the 10, $40 for the 20, $80 for the 30, and maybe $120 for the 40. It should be very easy to put that "100-year" package together for under $300.

BTW you can get the same gift pack, albeit with 375s instead of 750s and only in a wooden presentation box instead of a hand-crafted leather case, for $180 through WineCommune.

I've seen the small bottle sets for around $150. I think they were in a wooden framed box?
