20 Year Old White Tawny Port by Quinta de Santa Eufemia

Post by Andy Velebil »

Alex R. is over, as he had to deliver some perishable items  so I opened this bottle which I brought back from Portugal. I've never had this before as there aren't exactly a lot of 20 year old white tawny's out there. Anyways, I'm prying a group TN out of Alex since I have to :beat: to get TN out of him

A very light yellowish tan with lots of orange highlights. Lots of orange marmalade with marzipan, spicy yellow cake batter, and citrus. Very different nose than some of the other white Ports I've had. Although there are many layers, they are not integrated. More like simple layers of a cake stacked together. The palate is pretty simply with really faint citrus fruits (oranges, lemon), some brown sugar on the back palate, and although it has very good acidity there is no noticable tannins. The finish is short and clipped and nothing to speak highly of. Sadly, this is the poorest aged white Port I've had to date.

Andy,

Is this something different than the 1973 "Colheita" that Eufemia bottled? The few aged whites I've tasted I have enjoyed very much, so I'm always on the lookout for new ones to try.

Yes, a different company. IIRC, the family split and this is the other half of it. The other being Quinta da Casa de Santa Eufemia, which makes the "can't be labeled as '73" white port...confusing huh! :help:

Since I needed to re-arrange my fridge again tonight in order to make room for yet more incoming bottles, I took a quick look at my bottle and lo it does in fact read Casa de Santa Eufemia!

Very interesting... and it would be fun to try both of them side-by-side.
