2009 Port Gala
Friday, January 30th, Colheita tasting
Flight 1 - 1934 Niepoort, 1937 Kopke, 1941 Moreira

1934 Niepoort Colheita
bottled in 1978

Dark tawny, turning brown. Could almost be a mature VP or a Madeira. Yellowing meniscus.
Some alcohol on the nose, some very slight VA, and a tangy citrus note.

Rich in the mouth, with a firm foudation of citrus. Some light smoke and cooked tomato (but not stewed). Also some madeira-like notes that are more savory than sweet. Possibly some black tea?

A hard but not sharp edge to it.

Overall nice, but it seemed almost too concentrated.

This was a wonderful bottle. It wasn't in my top 3 of the night (out of twelve), but it was for my wife. It might have been my #4, after Roy's blend (which isn't available commercially). -Eric

This was great to try as I can't recall ever having it before.
