For The Love Of Port

Opened this bottle to celebrate my 47th b-day this week end .
Bottled in 1991 , a 47 year old colheita . timing is everything
Dark brown colour in the center with amber edge .
Spices , not sweet .
I'd say a medium finish , a touch of alcool .
Not what I look for in a colheita with 45+ yrs .

No decanting .
6 hours after 1st sip : still the same spices present ,Just a hint of alcool .
Received the bottle from Europe .
Was told It had been cellared .
Fill level was good , label intact , no signs of seepage .
But the price was less than 100 Euro's .
Don't get me wrong , for that price , I got what I paid for .

Or extended bottle aging didn't do it any favors after 17 years. Burmester is a house that filters it's Colheita's before bottling and the house feels that they should be best consumed closer to the date of bottling. I know there is some debate about this, but generally I feel older Colheita's lose some of that freshness with extended bottle aging.

I don't think there's much debate (in my mind); for sure it's true that Colheitas or Tawny loses some freshness with extended bottle aging.

Whether this is a plus or minus is the debate.
