Depressed Cork

I have seen discussions on raised corks and the implications on the quality of the port. However, I do not recall any discussion of depressed corks. What are the causes and what indications does it gve to the quality of the bottle.

I usually take those kind of bottles and put them on anti-depressants. :drunk:

Perhaps the cork can try writing in a journal.

"Dear diary,

Why so depressed?"

Walt,
there can be many reasons that include someone used their fat fingers to push it down while checking to see how sound it was, a cork machine that had an incorrect setting and drove it to far in, a loose cork that slipped when shipped, etc. It's hard to really say how it would effect it as that would depend on what caused it to be like that. If it was a cork machine issue then all should be well. If it was a loose cork that slipped then I would be worried about oxidation issues.

Do you have a bottle with a depressed cork?

Thanks for your humourous comments. I saw a bottle of 1994 Niepoort listed for $49. It had a comment that the cork was depressed. I was worried about the quality of the bottle. However, at the price I will buy it since I love the producer. Perhaps by opening the bottle
and freeing the cork will change its mood from :( to :) !!!

I'd love to see a TN on that Port, I have some Mags that need to be opened from '94 and am just looking for a good excuse. Maybe the 2010 :ftlop: 2nd Annual Gala Port Celebration!?!?!?
