An old friend of mine was at a dinner I was invited to last night and I had not seen him since he came to a 3-event tasting I hosted in 2003. Jorge Moreira who was about 31 last time I saw him here, is now the well known Douro and Port maker at Quinta de la Rosa.

There was a WA winemaker there too, and an importer who carries Jorge's wines and two others from the importer's company. We all brought along bottles, although not all Douro. The WA winemaker brought his own Riesling and a red which was good, but I definitely preferred his Riesling. There was even a 2004 Haut Brion which was tasty and young.

I must say that I was not dazzled by the 2004 Quinta de la Rosa Reserva, a red with a bit too much heat. We also had three Ports, all good but way "hot" for me as was the 2004 Douro red above. I was honest with Jorge (quietly so) as I sat next to him. He agreed that the 2004 was "too powerful" and he likes his 2005s reds better, as "they are more elegant."
