Not exactly Douro ; )

Post by Roy Hersh »

I am taking part in a modest Vinho Verde event this coming Saturday and wondering if anyone has tried or knows much about these bottlings:

Quinta de Linhares Avesso 2007

QUINTA DAS ARCAS:
Arca Nova Rosé 2007
Arca Nova Loureiro 2007

BORGES:
Gatão 2008
Quinta de Simaens 2008

QUINTA SOLAR DA PENA:
Quinta da Pena Loureiro Colheita Seleccionada 2007

haven't got any of these and I find great that there is enough people with interest for such a tasting. Vinho Verde are often overlooked with all those oaky monsters getting the attention!

Never had those, but of all the VV I'd had, not one has been bad. Some better than others, but so far the ones I've had have been very good QPR's considering I've not paid over $14/bottle for one

Are there going to be any red vinho verdes? I have never seen one in the States.

Vinho verde is awesome. I swear by the $4 bottle of Espiral from Trader Joe's. I am curious as to what a high end vinho verde delivers.

The only one I've had of these is the Quinta de Simaens. It's a nice glass of VV. Nothing really special, but I'd love to have some here as refreshing summer wine.

I am going to the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival starting tomorrow. I'll be there through Sunday. This tasting is going to be there with 2 dozen people and a guest speaker who I know well. She is a MS and a brilliant woman and her husband used to be in charge of all buying for the BC Province. I am excited to do a comparative tasting like this and will take good notes.

I have long been a fan of Vinho Verde and started drinking it in 1992 when Casal Garcia used to come to the USA before anybody really knew what VV was. I especially enjoy the 100% Alvarinho versions and have even tried a few "Reserve" bottlings of this crisp and extraordinarily food friendly white wine.

Thanks for the feedback too!

Casal Garcia and Aveleda are the two big VV brands I see in MA. I love the VV magnums for like $11.00! Almost that time of year again.

My wife and I had a wonderful vinho verde tinto in Portugal, and while not common, I have managed to find a few in the US. http://www.planetofwine.com/ has at least two different brands listed at the moment,
Adega Cooperativa de Ponte de Lima and Ponte da Barca.

So I'm looking at this month's Bon Appetit, and what do I see, but six vinho verdes in this month's "the sipping news" column. April 2009, p. 35.
