For The Love Of Port

I am currently in discussion with a great importer that represents one of the top names in the Douro. They have table wines and lots and lots of fun Ports that we've been discussing. I am very excited and this is every bit as progressive as our last one.

I will not be able to get this into the newsletter that will be out shortly, however, it will be in the next one for sure! This will take subscribers to a new level and there will be LBV, Tawny, Vintage, SQVP and a fantastic selection of aged Colheitas not typically seen here.

Pricing will be extremely aggressive too. So for those of you who have been sitting on the fence and wondering if you should bother with subscribing ... this particular buying opportunity should help you to make your decision pretty easy. I will do others in 2009 too, but this one will be every bit as comprehensive as the last one, with greater emphasis on Vintage Ports, although a handful of Colheitas too. Anyway, my advice ... subscribe now.

Anybody who is wondering if the newsletter is worth it, send me an email and I'll send you a couple of past issues and you can make up your own mind.

And so it shall be. There are 10 newsletters per year. I take a break in May and October when I do the Fortification Tour and Port Harvest Tour respectively. So the next newsletter after the upcoming one, will be circa June 1st. That gives you seven weeks at a minimum.

Normally I would stretch it out further by one month, but I want everyone to be able to have their wine shipped before temperatures get out of control. This offering will probably be one week to 10 days to ensure that by mid-June all Ports can be shipped.

I am very excited about this particular negotiation which is still shaping up!

Just remember that about 1/2 the U.S. can't ship in June as it's too hot. So as hard on the pocket book as it would be the earlier it comes out the better, unless they can hold for better weather.

7 weeks. Hmm... if I can manage to not make any big purchases before then, I ought to be able to take advantage of the offer without getting myself killed. Then I'll REALLY have an excuse to turn the study into a wine cellar!

I have spent lots of time with this FIRST TIER Port Shipper, putting this deal together and it is nearly ready. There is what's called, "posting laws" (should I bore you with this stuff?) that preclude this happening before June. But in the June newsletter that is slated to arrive no later than June 7th - you will have a truly stunning offer, with an even broader selection than the March offering ... of:

* A variety of Douro wines/vintages
* Reserve Ruby Port
* LBV Ports
* Tawny Port with an indication of age (all that this Shipper carries)
* Colheitas from the key decades going back to the early part of the 1900s.
* Vintage Ports - a nice lineup to say the least

No reason to keep touting these, but I did want to provide you with the latest information.

This is going to be offered from a mid-June Friday to the following Friday ... or until something sells out. These are not bin ends by any means. These are top drawer wines and Ports that I do not see being able to top. Although all have arrived "ex-cellars" directly to the importer, the actual offering will be worked through a retailer that is in a position to ship to more States and more efficiently handle your transactions. No, that does not mean an extra tier of price increases is in place. The retailer will agree to prices negotiated between me and the importer. This has been a learning curve for me too, and that's why your feedback in the last thread (along the way) was so key. You are helping me to help you.

Great news, although I can't yet provide the duration of time; I have found that the retailer utilized, will be willing to hold wines until the temperatures in your area (and theirs) are advantageous for shipping. So you have brought up a good point which I did my best to address.

Oh yeah, pricing is already very solid and I'm happy about it, but there will be additional tiered pricing discounts offered for purchasing at certain dollar levels, above and beyond what I initially envisioned.

Jeez, I need to save up more money for this.

I have curtailed my other purchasing, partly because I'm out of storage space, and partly because I know this opPORTunity is coming soon. Roy dropped some hints a while back about a producer that might be involved, but I won't speculate because he asked us not to. It has me salivating, that's for sure!

Why stop at the study? Do you really need all those rooms on the first floor?

Confession time - I will be digging a very large hole in the garden next year and putting an aircon unit in it. Capacity should be around 3,000 bottles but, very sadly, it will not even be a quarter full.

I remember buying wine I couldn't afford when I was still a student. Lots of ramen noodles. Fortunately I still like them after all that!

Wanna make a bet on how long it will remain under 3/4 empty once you have the space available to you?

I have seen friends build or buy cellars at home and they tend to fill at a disarmingly different pace compared to off site storage facilities.
