After the past couple weeks of crazy work hours I actually managed to get home at a decent hour today, yes work even on Memorial Day, that's just the nature of my line of work. After a simple pasta dinner I was itching for a glass of Port. It's been over two weeks since my last glass of nectar and this was a welcome reprieve. It's been almost exactly a year since my last bottle of this and I was curious to see how it was doing. To accompany it I cracked open some of Trader Joe's Roasted and Salted Marcona Almonds, which are quite good and about as close as I can get to the fresh version when visiting the Douro. Anyways, enough about me and some snacks, I know you'd rather read about the Port.

The last time I had this I remember it being a bit simple, disjointed, and a tad hot. What a difference a year makes. A nice medium bodied LBV that is straight forward and pleasant. Still young and fresh on the palate, I think it's awkward phase last year has finally passed and it's now turning into a nice little Port. Hard to stop sipping on, I've been at it now for the past couple hours now About 2 years ago I bought a case of these for around $13/bottle IIRC and I still have almost a 1/2 case left. I look forward to seeing how they continue to do over time as it's now turning out to be a nice little value Port. 86 points

Krohn is one of my favorite producers, however I never seem to be able to locate them outside of Portugal. Does anybody know who the importer or distr. is for their wines in the US? I'm in the midwest not far from Chicagoland and the bigger stores like Sam's or Binny's do not carry any of their ports or table wines (Valtorto). I'm envious that you came across a case as I would like to find even their simplest tawny or ruby!

I was visiting at Krohn a few weeks ago and had an amazing time with their owner. It is really one of the finer old school lodges in Gaia and I was pleased to finally get there. Just one left that I have never been to and I'll take care of that this Oct.

The quality of the Krohn has always been strong in the wood-aged wines like their Tawny and especially the Colheitas. But what really impressed me, was how well things have been steadily improving with their bottle-aged wines and even their VPs which had never been in my radar before. I think all of us were pretty surprised by how nicely their 2007 Vintage Port showed. It was even better over a few days.

Did you try the 07 Quinta do Retiro again? If so, how did it compare to the straight vintage the second time around?

It again was quite impressive and I was pleased at the end of the tasting to find out which one it was, as I was not sure it had made its way to the party. Impressive!
