Roy, my surname is not Miller. Probably a confusion.

According to my humble understanding the geologic formation of shist is identically proceeded in Europe. Sources in Europe are mainly in Slovenia, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Czech Republic, Poland, Norway, Hungary, Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, France, Begium, Luxemburg, Great Britain, Ireland and Germany.

As on the graph shown, it is apparently in a vertical strata. But naturally I do not have neither an education nor a deeper knowledge in geological matters so that my interpretation may be inapplicable.

I did a bit of research and I came across wildly differing opinions as to the age of the schist in the Douro. One article (http://www.vinfolio.com/vinfolioblog/20 ... hist-1.jsp) mentions 300 million years as the approx. age of Douro schist, which I do tend to believe. But...in another article on the geology of that area, actually it focused on the Vinho Verde region but the two bands of schist they were examining extended across and south of the Douro, the age was given as either 2.5 billion-4.5 billion years for one band or 350 million-320 million years for the other band. It seems to me that the younger band is probably the dominate source of schist in the Douro, so 350-320 million years appears to be a good estimate.
