Because the writers almost always vote for middle of the order guys ahead of top of the order guys, Rollins, Ichiro and Pedroia not withstanding. One could argue that they'd give it to Teixeira before they'd give it to Jeter. The only time I really saw the writers clearly take clubhouse presence into account was when they chose Kirk Gibson in 1988 (I was too young when Munson won in 1976).
