TN: 2006 Quinta do Econtro Merlot-Baga Bairrada

I was in one of my local wine shops (Kitsilano Wine Cellars) and spotted a Portuguese wine on the staff favourites list. Remembering this forum recently switched over to non-Douro wines as well, I decided to give it a try.
2006 Quinta do Encontro Merlot-Baga
Bairrada DOC
1+ hr decant (12-20-09)
Medium ruby colour. Floral aromas with some cherries in the background. Red and ripe fruits. Strawberry and raspberry stood out on the palate. Peppers and spice in there too. Balanced tannins though the acidity may be a little high. It began to mellow a bit after being open a little longer which leads me to believe it needs a longer decant time. Decent wine for it's price (<$20 CDN), though I did some searching around on Portuguese wine blogs and found it goes for 3-5 euros at home! I'll probably pick up another bottle or two if I see it again. 84 points.
