Planning Ahead: Port for New Year's Eve

Post by Roy Hersh »

Honestly, I can't wait for 2009 to end. I am so ready for a New Year, that opening something very special is definitely in the cards? I am thinking about one of these:

1934 Fonseca VP
1927 Cockburn's VP
1912 Niepoort Colheita
1940 Niepoort Garrafeira

I am still undecided. It will depend if I will be drinking alone or not. Which would you suggest?

What about you, have you started to think what you will open to toast to 2010?

I hinted at this in the thread about our oldest bottles, as this New Year's Eve will kill a few of my oldest, but the plan for NYE is:

1970 Fonseca VP
1964 Quinta do Noval Colheita

Well, not sure where this New Year's is headed...

On one hand, in my fridge there is:

1970 Grahams
1963 Croft
1977 Dow
1982 Sandeman

along with 2000 Portal Muscatel and we are suppose to open a 1977 Taylor 3 Liter... Somehow I think I will end up in bed at 12:15 with only drinking the Muscatel which is already open. Typical social circle drama, indecision, or lack of commitment to a plan thwarts every new year's eve. I also have family coming in from Switzerland and West Coast and haven't spoke to them about New Year's either...

2005 Q. de la Roeda
2003 Graham
1988 Churchill's Crusted Port
1980 Dow ( I was thinking maybe I could keep the Dow for when Moses comes to Montréal [cheers.gif] )
2 out of the 4 should be chosen .
This should be a no brainer , like ... England making it out of group C

Save me the Graham Crusted instead. You should drink the Dow, I have had it several times, but never had Grahams Crusted.

For me, probably, one of those:

1977 Niepoort Garrafeira
1992 Taylor's Vintage Port
1944 Real Vinicola Colheita
1963 Dalva Vintage Port

I have decided that 2009 needs to go out with a bang, so I'm about to head downstairs and decant a 1970 Taylor Fladgate. An 8-hour decant should have it ready around 10:00 pm and still going strong at midnight!

Happy New Year everyone!

Pete&Eva had a great dinner at Paesanos; went home around 10:30; watched the unrated version of "Hangover" (Eva fell asleep), and we missed midnight completely. It's tough, getting old.

The nice thing about New Years is that you get another chance every year.

(2 btls Primo Franco, 1 btl "Prine", several glasses of Ferriera 20 yr. Maybe?)

Finishing the 2nd bottle of PF while catching up on all my on-lines...

Wow, nary a mention of Nimrod by Peter. I am shocked he survived the New Year without it. [cheers.gif]

So Peter, did you scoop up the remaining bottles of it from around the USA?

I wound up opening a fine bottle of 1907 Blandy's Bual the morning after, although drinking alone, it was crazy good. TN to follow.

Nope. I've decided to make a clean break. If Warre quit making it, I will quit drinking it. :beat:

I did just order 2 cases of the Ferriera 20, though (if Kenny can still get it for $51). It may become my "house" port. (Eva likes it a lot, as well.)

Indeed. One of the best 20 years along with Noval, Warre, Sandeman, and Ramos Pinto.
