2000 Martinez Vintage Port
Color: Dark purple with a brick/ruby rim.
Nose: Caramel macchiato, rich grapes, blackberry, and some heavy dust.
Palate: Nice and rich. A pleasant sweetness. Milk chocolate, but easy on the milk. Good tannins and good acidity. Just enough warmth to remind you that it is alcoholic.
Finish: Tannic and grapey. Decent warmth. There's a slight edge or bite in the finish, but it's pretty small. Good length.
An outstanding effort. It's not epic, but it can run with the big dogs. I mentioned at the time that I'd like to try it (and the 2003) head-to-head with some of the 2007s that I rated in the same range, because I think that would give me a firmer grip on where those young Ports really belong. 92 points.
