Yalumba 50 Year Old Antique Tawny Museum Reserve

Post by Eric Menchen »

I'm not sure I should even post this here, since this isn't officially a Port, and isn't even labeled as such any more. But it was served with a flight of Port as a ringer, so here you go. (Moderator, feel free to move this elsewhere if you so desire.)

My pour showed some slight haze. Sweet and acidic aroma with slight solvent character, almost acetone. There is some charred wood aroma too, pleasant cinnamon, and a mustiness as well. Perhaps this combines for sandalwood? On the sweet side, this shows a light caramel/toffee flavor. There is lots of tart acid, citrus fruity with lemon, orange, and lime. It is quite tangy in a fairly long finish. Later this gave a candy sweet aroma, but it was almost getting stale. There was still wood aroma though! 91 points? (Tasted blind.)

Eric, given that you hosted, I assume you knew this was the ringer. How did the others go? were they able to pick it as not being Portuguese?
I've not had the opportunity to taste this tawny, nor have I done a direct comparison between an Australian tawny like that so it would have been a fun exercise.
Yalumba are far more known for their table wines than they are for fortifieds (at least in Australia) but they are a quality producer that produces some excellent products at a range of price points.

I did not host, but I poured this one and had a good idea that it wasn't from Portugal by the shape of the bottle. Others were not privy to the bottle shape, but I think a fair number of people thought this wasn't a 40 year old Port. Maybe someone else can chime in. This was served at the :ftlop: 10th Anniversary.

I knew what it was but not what glass it was in until I tasted it. It was so different than anything else we had all weekend. Lacked acidity and was very cloying. One small glass and I was done. Too sweet.

Yep. Though in my case I didn't add 2 + 2 to get Yalumba until we were basically done with the flight and discussing things (prior to reveal). At which point I had my "aha!" moment and realized that that's what had to be going on for this glass. Once I had that moment I was also able to mentally place the '58 Krohn in the flight as well, as I thought it was also very different from the 40-yr olds and knew it wasn't the other "big" ringer. (Which was the Moreira and which was in a later flight.)
