What to eat with a tawny?

Hello

Yesterday a started a new bottle of Graham tawny 20 years, It’s a wonderful Tawny and I’m really enjoying it. However it is nice to combine port and food and I would really like some suggestions from you of different kinds of solid food to combine this Port with.

Leo,

I often drink VP with food but I don't remember ever having drunk a tawny except at the end of a meal. I guess that I would start with the traditional things like nuts, crackers, apples and then start experimenting with cheeses.

Then experiment with whatever seems to work......and let us know!

If you want something to go perfectly with your glass of Graham's 20 yr old Tawny I would have no hesitation but to advise you to have another glass of 20 yrd old Tawny from another shipper so that you can compare the 2 side by side 8)

I keep trying to explain that the Croft '45 is what goes best with the Big Mac. If you want to drink the Croft '55 then best to drink that with the plain cheeseburger (no mustard, spoils the aftertaste).

I can't fault Derek's suggestion that what goes best with a glass of 20 yo tawny is another glass of 20 yo tawny!

Good point, Alex, I'll remember that the next time I open a 45 or 55 - I'll try to remember the phrase "No cheese with my 55 please" - that should sort it

You're not paying attention again Derek - of course you want cheese with your '55 - it's a plain cheeseburger with no mustard.

I agree with having the tawny at the end of the meal with either a medium-rich pudding or medium cheeses. Oh, and chocolate.

I have just bought the lighter Warre's Otima 20yo Tawny which would be an interesting comparison with the heavier and sweeter Graham's. Side by side comparisons of Taylor's and Graham's always go down well with the contrasting styles but equivalent weights.

- to be honest, I prefer the plain cheesburger with either the 45 or the 55 - the Big Mac only goes well with a 1927

My suggestion for a 20 Y.O Tawny would be a dessert like tiramisú. The coffee and the mascarpone cheese are a great combination for the woody and dry fruit taste of the 20 Y.O.

While I love cheeses with VP, I much prefer nut tarts with either tawny port or malmsey madeira.

For you guys from the U.K., I'm talking about a pastry shell filled with cashews and pecans in a caramel-like filling, not a crazy prostitute.
