Heard of Petre's VP (Niepoort)?

Post by Eric Menchen »

I had never heard of Petre's VP until this listing showed up on winebid.com a few weeks ago,
https://www.winebid.com/BuyWine/Item/71 ... ort-Petres
$120 per bottle seems like a ridiculous price to me. Then a case (of 6 as I recall) showed up in an Acker auction that just ended yesterday. That was at a much more reasonable price.

Anyone ever heard of this? Can you offer some insight?

There is but one tasting note, by Al, in the database, and that's for the 1995.

Yes, I've heard of it before. A label that Niepoort used (still uses??) for a specific market which I think is the Netherlands?

The Petre's label is found commonly around Europe on younger tawnies; I see it frequently in the Netherlands (as Andy notes), Belgium, France and Portugal. I have never bothered with the tawnies though have consumed a couple of VPs from the 1990s, both of which were inexpensive as well as decent for the price, which I recall as having been shy of EUR 30/bottle.

I've only ever seen or tasted the 1995 Petre's Vintage Port. If I recall a conversation I once had with Dirk, this is a label which he uses for Ports made from bought in grapes or left-over lots of Vintage wines which are too good to blend into the LBV.

Nobody has heard of it, which means it tends to be pretty good value for money. If anyone has seen or heard of any other vintages, please share that info here.

I think I have seen others, but would need to look further.

Also, the VPID currently contains two images for Petre's VP, again 1980 and 1990.
