TN: 2016 Alves de Sousa Quinta da Gaivosa Vinho de Lordelo Douro red

Post by Rune EG »

Quinta da Gaivosa is well known to us, especially the Douro red (but also some port wines). But this red wine we had never tasted. Vinha de Lordelo is the oldest vineyard in Quinta da Gaivosa. Field blend with over 30 different types of grapes which are above 100 years old. Produced only in best years (recently 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2016).

Decanted 6.5 hrs. Will try one hour less for the next bottle. Medium to dark red colour. Subdued fruity aroma. Medium to full body.
Powerful and really elegant. Fruit, oak and minerals in a very pleasant combination. The structure is excellent and balance acidity/sweetness is very good. Nice “polished” tannins. Slightly on the dry side towards the end in combination with some fresh berries. Long aftertaste. 94 pts.
