Primeur vintage ports & 2024 vintage potential

Post by Clement R »

Hello,

I want to set aside some nice 2024 bottles for my young son, to gift later in his life. Just saw that some producers (e.g. Niepoort) are have some "primeur" bonds, like in Bordeaux.

Does anyone here have some insight from the producers about the potential quality of the 2024 vintage, this early on ? And in general, are the primeur bonds worth it, regarding final price ? Asking because Bordeaux primeur are usually a very bad idea regarding the final price of the bottle, is it the same for ports?

Edit after more info: the seller (Vila Viniteca) is saying that even if it not declared yet, Niepoort told them it would be declared. They are selling the bottle at 46€, and the 375 at 25€.

I am not getting into the pricing or futures with Port.

I can tell you that 2024 is looking great. Some are saying big things about 2024. Yesterday, someone I respect, said they believe that 2025 is better than 2024. That's the thing about what's already in cask and seems to have everything necessary. You can never see what's in the next vintage. I just wrote about this for the newsletter coming out on Friday.

I have also heard very good things about 2024. Some even whispering the word "classic" in hushed tones. I think you'll be pretty safe being able to get 2024 Ports, so I'm not sure getting them en primeur is necessary.

Roy's news about 2025 is new to me and complicates things a bit. If 2025 indeed does turn out to be better than 2024, producers might decide to wait and declare it instead. Or maybe not? Taylor declared 2016-2017-2018 so hopefully that whole "only 3 vintages per decade and never back-to-back" thing is dead and gone. But even if producers don't issue a full declaration, it does seem like 2024 is going to be good enough that they'll at least declare single quinta vintage Ports.
