Where do you purchase your Madeira bottles

Of course the Rare Wine Company in the USA ... but beyond RWC, where else do you shop for your Madeira?

Mom and Pop liquor stores around New Bedford. I go for 10-20 year range Bual or Malmsey’s. Justinho’s are under priced at most stores compared to Boston or other cities. I haven’t seen the vintage Madeira deals yet, but I have only been to few stores.

One would think Boston would have tons of Madeira tucked away in odd locations as we were the center of Madeira trade & distribution since Colonial times.

Every now and then an interesting bottle comes up on WineCommune.

Auctions used to be a good source, as there was typically little interest in Madeiras... but unfortunately (price wise) this seems to have changed in recent times.

Yes, the interest today ... certainly outweighs the supply. Prices continue to rise and should do so more rapidly in the next decade.

Unlike Port, I am not the "great historian" when it comes to Madeira. I have some reading under my belt but this is what seperates my full fledged status as a more serious Madeira freak.

So, I know of Charleston, SC and places like Savannah, GA but had not heard about Boston being the center of the Madeira trade. Is this really true and if so, where can I read up on this?

I say Boston as it was one of the first major port cities in the US and is still active. The old John Hancock story about not paying Madeira taxes pre-Boston Tea Party. As for something to "prove" Boston was the center, well that may take some work or be a generalization, but for sure Boston was an epicenter for trade in the North East during colonial times.
