Everyday LBV Port

I am looking for a an everyday LBV Port that I can buy in bulk that will help me keep my hands off of my vintage ports this winter. It should be readily available in the states. Any suggestions?

Robert,

If you can find any of the following, they are all unfiltered and are exceptional LBVs that will provide both short-term drinking pleasure and the ability to age for a few more years. These are all Ports I have personally tried, hence my recommendation. They may be a tad pricier than most filtered LBVs, but the quality of some rivals that of some VP.

Noval 2000 LBV
JMFonseca & van Zeller 2000 LBV
Smith Woodhouse 1994, 1995 LBVs
Warre 1995 LBV
Quinto do Portal 1996 LBV

Portal and the JMFonseca & van Zeller may or may not be readily available in your area as they are smaller producers, but if you find them and have a chance to pick them up, they are fantastic.

dont forget the Burmester LBV 2001 if you can get it there. The best LBV i ever tasted. It currently is my favourite port.

Ramos Pinto LBV is my favorite, followed by Warre's. Ramos Pinto LBV also comes in a few dollars less than most of the others.

Ramos Pinto LBV is a favorite of mine as well. I recently had to go back to the store here to purchase all the '98 R.P. LBV they had as it was pretty tasty with some silky tannins for an LBV.

I am a big fan of Noval, Javali, Crasto and Niepoort LBVs.

I just found Dow's 2000 LBV at Costco (if you have one down there) for $14 per bottle. Pretty good QPR, and not a bad drop in its own right. At a recent charity benefit tasting, the Dow Rep mentioned that quite a few Costcos had the Dow's.

I forgot..the 2001 Krohns LBV Unfiltered. Retail is $13-15 and that is a steal at that price. It drinks well now, and has some mid term ageing potential.

Thanks for the tip on that one. Saw it locally for $14, and left it there while I stocked up on some '01 Niepoort LBV ($19.) Will pick some up the next time I'm there!

I thought I'd add my Two other good LBV's to look for are Churchill's and Quinta do Castelinho. The Castelinho is another one that might be a bit hard to find, but it's good to keep an eye out for. Oh, and Ferreira. Can't remember if anyone mentioned Ferreira.

Another vote for Niepoort LBV 2001. Magalhaes LVB 1999 is delicious too. My all time favorite so far is Quinta do Noval LBV 1997 (unfiltered).

I've seen 1996 Quinta do Castelinho Vintage Port locally. It's about $19.00 and is of just OK quality. For the price, I thought it is a worthy competitor, but the Ramos Pinto LBV is a better value.

I find the Ferreira LBV to fall apart quickly. Initially and for under 12 hours it is quite lovelly, but after that it just goes downhill. A fine LBV to have with dinner vs. having after dinner.

The 1996 Quinta do Portal LBV is available through planetofwine.com, a New Jersey consortium of wine stores (check winesearcher.com). I just bought 2 cases of it at about $17 per bottle and opened one to try - it is in fine condition and drinking well!
