TN: 2005 Niepoort Vertente

Post by Felix Warners »

Niepoort, Vertente 2005:
Colour: Purple Red
Nose: This smells like a dark chocolate bonbon filled with cherries. The Dark chocolate is prominent but it is complimented with a lot of fruit: Fresh prums, cherries, blueberries. Chocolate with ripe fruit..... a very nice nose
Taste: Very soft tannins, creamy texture. The nice thing of this wine is that it combines ripe fruit (not jammy) with some vanilla cream and a nice acidity. It is not very complex but it is very well made.

I took this from the shop where I work, this bottle has been open for about 20hours (was opened yesterday evening).
I had this wine a few months ago and then I noticed much more wood on the nose and taste, previously I didnt give it the time to really open up.

Felix,

Thanks for your first post. I am glad to see you over here too! Thanks for joining us from The Netherlands. I am sure you are going to enjoy yourself here and we can all learn together.

About the 2005 Vertente, personally I prefer the 2004 although I know Dirk Niepoort likes 2005 dry reds better than his 2004s. I think the Vertente needs another year for the oak to integrate and to really settle down. When you had it a few months ago (I had it in May and Oct.) like my similar impressions, it was tight and not really ready ... unless with plenty of time in a decanter.

Again, your presence is welcome and I am sure you will be warmly received when you post here!

Thanks Roy for the warm welcome. I totally agree with you that this wine deserves another year to really settle down.
In May 2007 I was so lucky to be in a room where Dirk Niepoort gave a masterclass.
He presented his own wines next to the wines that inspirated him to make the wines like they are.
The Vertente 2005 was the first wine he poured, the wine that he had in his mind when he made this wine was Chateau Poujoux 2004 Moulis.
In this tasting I tasted side by side the Battuta 2004 next to the 2005Battuta (reference: Barolo 2001 Sandrone which was a stunning wine) and the Charme 2004 and 2005 (reference:La Tache 2002 Romanee Conti, my first time I tasted anything from this domaine, I can still taste this wine).
My impression was that 2005 is the vintage that presented itself with more elegance but still with a lot of concentration and length. 2004 had more power but lacked the balance that imho the 2005 had.

Felix,

Welcome to FTLOP, its truly great to have you hear and I look forward to reading more posts from you. It looks like we are probably going to do a Douro dry wine for our Virtual Tasting Forum. So it would be great for you to join in the fun. Of course this group has fun no matter what 8--)

Every month, toward the end of the month, we all figure out what we should drink for the following month. So far, it looks like we will be doing Douro dry wines for January. Here is the link for the discussion of what to drink
http://www.fortheloveofport.com/ftlopfo ... php?t=4475

Once we figure out what we are going to drink, everyone adds their TN. Its quite fun as it gets a good number of us trying the same or simmilar thing for the month. If you read through the Virtual Tasting Forum, there are some great discussions about particular Ports.

Wine of the month! Found this after asking Roy for directions!!!

I am a big fan of this idea and am wondering who is going to choose the WOTM? Will we be allowed to make suggestions bearing in mind availability as we all live in different areas. I feel sure Crasto is everywhere for example but how about Quinta de Whatever?!! Todd will agree that we have a terrific selection here in Alberta/Edmonton/DeVines (no connection) but what about you others?

Any how lets go with it!!
