On Sale: Quinta do Vesuvio - HURRY!!!!! Going fast ...

Post by Roy Hersh »

As received by email, if this isn't a great deal on young VP ... I doubt you'll find one much better!:

Subject: 2005 Quinta do Vesuvio - Blowout

Dear Wine Lover,
Summer has been thrust upon us with scorching temperatures in the mid to upper 90's. While most Atlantans aren't even thinking of Vintage Port, that delectably sweet beverage from Portugal's Duoro region, we were just offered an incredible deal that definitely warrants your attention! The wine is the 2005 Quinta do Vesuvio which is produced from a 400 year old vineyard acquired by the Symington Family, which already owned several of the top Port houses (Graham's, Dow, Smith Woodhouse), in 1989. Their intention was to produce the world's finest single vineyard port and after tasting several vintages over the years, we've found them to be nothing short of outstanding! Here is the review of the 2005 vintage from renowned Port authority Roy Hersh: (Roy's note: renowned by whom?)

2005 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port – Dark inky purple extract, speaking of which, I smell the color purple and the nose drove me crazy with potent purple fruits that continued to change and evolve each time I took another whiff. Explosive and complex from the moment the cork was pulled, this is the real deal with captivatingly concentrated, almost brambly boysenberry and blackberry fruit that was a viscous Port that overwhelmed my palate. The structure is more typical of what I found in 2003 cask samples, rather than other examples of this vintage, with enormous ripe tannins that are powerful. Excellent balance, with a multi-layered mid-palate that led to the tour de force finish with a touch of heat at the very end. A tasty number which should be able to drink well young, (with extended decanting) but will go the distance too and I’d suggest enjoying this from 2012-2040+. The ’05 Quinta do Vesuvio is in another stratosphere altogether, it’s the finest Port I’ve tried from this vintage to date. 95-97 points - Roy Hersh "For the Love of Port"

I just called to see that this is real. They have very little left, maybe 2-3 six packs. I asked him to reserve them for US. Please do NOT take more than 1 six pack. You must mention For The Love Of Port to be able to purchase one of the six packs that Patrick has reserved. Up until this phone call, I've never heard of him or this particular retailer but a good friend made the recommendation.

What I found out in speaking to Patrick ... which did not appear in the sales info ... is that they have 35 untapped six-packs of Quinta de Roriz 2005 VP for about the same price.

Run, I say! Heck the savings here could offset the cost of your FTLOP subscription. 8--) :D

I bought a 6-pack! That's a really good deal... can't believe they're selling it that cheap!

Of course, I'll have to hang onto it for 20 years now, but hey that's what the Eurocave is for!

Sorry folks, I snagged the last one. It's really too bad that he doesn't have more, although this excites me as it will be my first case of Vesuvio. I look forward to seeing the "special OWC" that everyone is always so excited about. :)

Holy smokes - I can hardly believe it. Now to get it across the border!!

Todd - you might want to specifically request the OWC because many shops ship in styrofoam instead because it is much safer. If you don't specifically ask for the OWC you might not get it, and if you do ask for it you may have to pay to have it shipped separately. But thanks for reminding me about it, because now I need to send Patrick an email and ask for it also!

Roy - I passed on the Roriz because I don't really know anything about it. How does it compare to a Vesuvio or Noval?

Thanks for the heads-up Glenn - I wasn't aware of this... I will definitely email Patrick as well asking for the same.

More fine news and even a discount for you FTLOP folks. : )
Please do honor that the last one to buy the Vesuvio only gets a six pack of which there is one more around.

Check out that price on the Roriz for you gents:

Roy,
Thanks for the phone call and permission to use your tasting note on the Vesuvio. As per our conversation, I've reserved the last three six-packs for your subscribers and there are currently 30-6pks of the '05 Roriz available at special price of $30/btl for FTLOP subscribers. I'm sure to sell out of the Vesuvio and will be offering my clients the Roriz for $35/btl.

With your permission, I'd love to include a link to your site and invite my clients to subscribe to your newsletter.
Regards,
Patrick

On the off chance that someone might be willing to let go of 1 or 2 of the Vesuvio......

I logged on too late, evidently.

Actually Heather, there was still one six pack of the Vesuvio left ... as of my last posting yesterday.

Ok, who grabbed the last six pack of Vesuvio?

Were there any takers on the 2005 Roriz? I had it while visiting Quinta de Roriz last month (Heather had it too) and it is well worth investing in for that price! The discount doesn't hurt either.

Patrick had indicated to me on the phone that I had obtained the last of the Vesuvio, but your post came after mine, so perhaps they found an accounting error! ;)

I have since talked with Patrick again and added a six pack of Roriz to my order. Was VERY tempted to buy 12, but I gotta get these across the Cdn border somehow, so not too sure how that will work. If I get greedy and try to bring back 18 bottles, I will get dinged for sure.

I ended up picking up a six pack of the Roriz as well as another couple of bottles of a goodie that Patrick offered me over email.

Blew the budget, but all is well. :salute:

I wanted to be sure my order was confirmed first!

Smith Woodhouse Colheita '76 for $40. It is my birthyear and there is virtually nothing from '76 around... at least nothing in these parts! I picked up a single bottle of Fonseca Guimaraens at a charity auction for an INSANE price, I once owned a Niepoort '76 Colheita, but God punished me for lying to the Cdn Customs officials and made the bottle shatter in my luggage! ;) This is now the first wine I have had a chance to purchase from my birthyear that I might actually be able to drink without feeling (too) guilty! So I picked up a pair of bottles.

Looks like Patrick has (maybe HAD, probably all gone by now) some Graham's 2003 Mags as well... Wow... what I price. If only I could afford that.... It would go very well with the Magnum of Grahams 1997 VP (my first - and so far ONLY - Magnum ever purchased) in the cellar. Unfortunately, I have pretty much blown the budget for the summer!

Todd,

I have seen the 1976 Kopke Colheita here in Seattle reasonably often. (I have one sitting open in my decanter at home right now.) In fact, I'm pretty sure it is available at the store I'm going to tonight for a Dow's tasting. It is usually in the $70-$80 range which I feel is rather high, but if you really want one for your collection I'd be happy to pick one up and stash it for you in my fridge until we find a time to meet!

Well the store did, in fact, have a bottle of the 1976 Kopke Colheita but their prices have gone up and they now want $102.50 for it. Unless you're really desperate for a bottle of something from 1976, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

The store is really close by, though, so if you want it let me know and I'd be happy to pick it up for you.

Thanks Glenn, I may just do that. My pursuit of 1976 stuff is not a fanaticism (yet) mainly because they are kinda expensive, but I do try to pick up things that are reasonably priced when I can find them. The SW'76 Colheita for $40 was not something I could pass up - reasonable and rare! ;)
