One of the oddities of Port is that old, rare, bottles take on collector prices. It has nothing to do with the quality of the wine, it's just something that collectors desire to be able to display as part of their collection.

That might be part of what's going on with that bottle. How often do you even see a 50 year old LBV? LBVs tend to be consumed, I would think.

When VPs older than that are cheaper there is a problem. Its a curiosity that I am sure is well past its prime by now, as 1958 was not a good year at all.

I'm with Andy on this one. I think the most I have paid for an LBV is £30 for a 1965 unfiltered Noval a couple of years ago. I only paid that price because it is my birth year. $650: 2 or 3 bottles of Fonseca 1963 VP or 1 bottle of 1958 LBV? Go figure

You're looking at it as a Port. In that respect, you are 100% correct.

I worked for Wizards of the Coast during the Magic: the Gathering and Pokemon years, so I have an a second perspective on collector pricing. To me it looks like that's exactly what's going on here - this is not priced as a Port, it is priced as a very rare collector's item. It is a bottle that very few others - if ANY others - will have. That's an exclusive prize for a collector.

People used to pay $500-$700 for a paper playing card from the original limited-production runs of Magic: the Gathering. (They may still... I haven't checked prices in years.) I thought they were crazy, in no small part because after paying $500 for a card they would encase them in lucite and hide them in their closets. When I finally realized that they weren't buying a playing card, that they were buying a collector's item, then it finally made some sense. Not a lot... but some.

LBV for that much money...NO! If it was maybe a $200 for an old birthyear, ok..maybe....if there was nothing else.

Avery's Duke of Malmsey is an entry level Maderia. Not even an indication of age.

Since Aabalat is close to me I visit them on occasion. I have seen the 1958 Fonseca Quinta Mileau Late Bottled Vintage Port. It has good color still - better than most 1958 vintage ports. 1958 has to be one of the first LBVs bottled. I suspect it was a vintage port lot that was not declared. The price is high because it is a 50th birthyear or anniversary wine, and ports are the best wines out there with the exception of even rarer and more expensive 1958 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.

Unless you live in Edmonton, where $650 doesn't even get you the ONE bottle of Fonseca 1963. Nope, try $850! Yup, its a crime.

Still, if I was a guy with more money than I knew what to do with, guess what? I would pick one up for the nostalgia reason - just like Glenn indicated might be the reasoning behind the pricing.
