1952 Barros Colheita Port

Post by Glenn E. »

Cross-posting from TPF, which is where this Old & Odd tasting was organized.

1952 Barros Colheita

Look: Lightly cloudy. Somewhat darker than the '47... more mahogany than light brown in its tint. Still a red drink, though.

Nose: Some VA (but not much). Citrus leaning toward vitamin C tablet rather than any particular fruit.

Taste: Very nice. Smooth but full. Citrus and acid like the Sandeman 20-yr old tawny, but not as overt. Dried apricot mellowed by fig and prune.

This was my WOTN. As with the '47 Barros, I felt that this Port stood up to anything when I started comparing head-to-head. It also went REALLY well with my filet mignon and truffled mac & cheese. I was a little disappointed in the color and cloudiness... if this had had the bright and vibrant color of the '42 Hooper it could have been a real stunner.

Had this a number of times and its always a very good colheita. I don't recall ever getting VA on it though. But if you liked this one, do try the 1952 Kopke Colheita. IMO, an even better Port than this one.

I have a half bottle of the 1957 Kopke, but haven't ever seen the 1952. I'll keep an eye out for it!
