A little Niepoort surprise

Post by Andy Velebil »

This was interesting timing I must say. I couldn't have planned this if I tried given the current thread about the 2005 Charme. Last week I ordered a couple bottles of 2001 Niepoort Redoma's that I found being closed out for cheap. It's not a blockbuster wine, but a very good wine which I've enjoyed in the past that has some nice secondary notes coming through in this stage of its life. Anyways, the only Niepoort the store listed in their inventory was this one. So was I surprised when I opened the box. I first noticed the bottle shape and though "what the heck is this." I then noticed the IVDP selo...ok, it's Portuguese at least...this couldn't be all that bad. I then pulled the bottle out and saw it was the 2002 Niepoort Charme

Like I mentioned, the store had no listing of this. Matter of fact they only had two Portuguese wines listed at all, the Redoma and a cheap $12 bottle of something from the Dao area. A check of wine searcher only shows two stores in the world listing it for sale. While I thank them for sending these very rare first vintage bottles of Charme, I will call them tomorrow to inform them of their error and see how they would like to handle it. I would hate for them to take a loss if it was a simple employee error.

Oh my God Andy!!!!

I mean it is a great attitude from your side to make it clear with them, I don' know the relation you have there. From my side, with all th money I have to plundge into the SAQ system, wenever I have the change to save a couple of dollar with them I do it.

I only had the Charme 2002 2 times in 5 years. Let me tell you that more recently, in August it was the best Charme I ever had in my life. It was simply a perfect wine. So if you plan to talk with them, please at least open a bottle, you'll definitevely make a different plan of action.

Cheers!

It's a little different down here, Frederick. Some states have a government owned monopoly - Washington's only covers liquor - but in most states beer, wine, and Port are sold by local retailers. While we all enjoy stiffing The Man from time to time, it's different when it's a local store that you want to support.

Yes, I don't believe in that. I'm sure it was a mistake, either in the inventory listing or in the shipping department. I'm inclined to think the previous as I got the last two bottles of what was supposed to be the Redoma. They only have the other cheap wine listed (and it was a Vinho Verde, not from the Dao as I thought). Have not heard back from them yet, but with the holidays I figure it might take some time for them to return my message.

Andy has done the right and noble thing in this case. Karma has a funny way of taking care of these things.
