Buyer's Tip: "The Gold Standard"

Post by Roy Hersh »

This should be obvious by now ...

Pay what is necessary if you can find the 2004 Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte. If you are serious about appreciating great Douro wines, this is one you want to have in your cellar. It would be first in ranking, if I were to do a top 12 list. Maybe that would be a fun thread.

In fact ... now it is!

So if you had to choose your Top 12 Douro wines that you've tasted, what would it be?

Heck, we had 30 over the one weekend and I am sure that those were not the first you've ever had, so this should be easy!

Only 12???? :D

Im going to cheat a bit...

Gouvyas Vinhas Velhas 2001/04/05
Poeira 2001/2004/2005
Abandonado 2004/05
Brunheda Vinhas Velhas 2001
Batuta 2001/04/05
Vale Meão 2001/02/04/05
Pintas 2001/02/04
Barca-Velha 1985/91/99
Crasto Vinha da Ponte 2004 - i'm with you Roy...buy, buy, buy!!!!
Campo Ardosa RRR 2000/03
Robustus 2004
Charme 2002/04/05 - i'm not so crazy about the 06 right now...but maybe it will becam something special...

With the exception of the early Barca-Velha, all the above wines will only get better with further aging...IMHO!!!

It hurts to leave so many outside :wall:

That's an extremely difficult question, but one that is a lot of fun to think about. Not a complete list by any means, but these wines come to mind first (they're in no particular order!):
  • Quinta do Côtto Grande Escolha 2000
  • Niepoort Charme 2004
  • Quinta do Vale D. Maria 2005
  • Quinta do Vale Meão 2004
  • Quinta do Passadouro Reserva 2003
  • Poeira 2004
  • Niepoort Batuta 2004
  • Casa Ferreirinha Barca Velha 1985 (the only one I ever drank!)
  • Casa Ferreirinha Quinta da Leda 2001
  • Quinta do Crasto Vinha Maria Teresa 2001
  • Wine & Soul Guru (no specific vintage here, just great every year)
  • Niepoort Redoma Branco Reserva (every vintage since 2004 has been excellent)
But enough about me, what do YOU think of me? -- Johnny Bravo

Wow, I feel very fortunate to have tried almost every wine on Pedro and Ronald's list except that old '85 Barca Velha and one or two others. I'd have a hard time picking between them if I were to choose a "favorite" list, because both guys have some fantastic wines. I am hoping others will do the same and then I will probably put my own list together too. :salute:
