2006 Lurton Barco Negro

Greetings:

I'm estatic that I found this forum, since 90% of my wine purchases tend to be Portuguese table wines. Although I live in the US, I have spent a good deal of my life living in both Brazil and have visited Portugal regularly over the past decade. Due to my job, I will have the fortunate opportunity to go there on a regular basis over the next two years.

Nonetheless, I searched the forums and haven't seen any mention of this wine - although forgive me if it has been mentioned before.

The Lurton 2006 Barco Negro which I purchased two bottles of a few weeks ago was rather mediocre and closed in terms of nose and finish. Despite the name and the description on the label, it tended to be much lighter than others from the region. I served it with lamb loin chops and cous-cous with grão. I wouldn't classify this as terrible by any stretch, although I have had much better wines over the past year at lower price points. This Barco Negro was US$11.99. For 8.99 or 6.99, I find something like Altano, Vila Regia, Lavradores de Feitoria, or Charamba to be much more complex.

Great having you with us and I am glad you found us. Wow, that's a lot of Portuguese wines I look forward to reading about more of them from you as IMO they ofter some great drinking value for the money.

As to your wine, Can't say I've ever heard of this one. Thanks for posting on it.

The actual producer is J & F Lurton and they blend Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. It is an inexpensive and simple wine and Dirk Niepoort collaborated with Jacques and Francois Lurton on this project, along with the Mateus group. They began their escapades in 2004 and a couple of years ago purchased Quinta Beira Douro, with about 25 acres. They make a handful of wines and this is their entry level offering. Give them a few more years and I think they may start producing some really fine wines when they really understand their own terroir and the characteristics of not only their vineyard, but the grapes within it.
