A great offering of VP & Madeira from top notch retailer

Post by Roy Hersh »

Dear Oenophile,
Port and fortified wines in general are amazing creations that can age seemingly forever. I was recently reading through some tasting notes on older wines and saw that we had some outstanding ports in our warehouse here in St. Helena. A majority of these came from a local collector who had impeccable taste in wines and a true love for ports. ---- Stefan

1970 Caves Messias Vintage Port Quinta Do Cachao 37 x 750mL -- $75 ***
1970 Caves Messias Vintage Port Quinta Do Cachao 8 x 750mL -- $65 *** (hwsl)
"Unusually interesting: made with grapes selected at the quinta by Belle and Barney Rhodes and made for them by Messias. Classic nose; excellent flavour with touch of vanilla and spice." Michael Broadbent

1864 Blandy`s Grand Cama de lobos Solera 1 x 750mL -- $595 (bn, sos, cc) ****
"A Lovely tangy, almost tarry but refined bouquet and fabulous flavour. Fairly sweet, soft, well balanced." Broadbent

1912 Vintage ***** The last great classic vintage of the period. Twenty five shippers. Can still be excellent (Broadbent)
1912 Graham Vintage Port 1 x 750mL -- $795 (Loeb, wsl )

1920 Vintage **** Small production but high quality, good, ripe, fairly robust wines. Sturdy if well kept can still be very good (Broadbent)
1920 Croft Vintage Port 1 x 750mL -- $550 (English Bottled, dc, sos)
1920 Fonseca Vintage Port 2 x 750mL -- $500 (bn, no label, stamped capsule)
1920 Fonseca Vintage Port 1 x 750mL -- $550

1948 Vintage **** A very good vintage but declared by only nine shippers which in retrospect, was an unfortunate error of judgment as it turned out to be so successful. It was seven years before another vintage of real quality was declared. (Broadbent)
1948 Graham Vintage Port 1 x 1.5L -- $2495 WS95 ***** Broadbent (crc)
1948 Taylor Vintage Port 1 x 750mL -- $795 WS99 ***** (Loeb, sos )
1948 Taylor Vintage Port 1 x 750mL -- $795 WS99 ***** (Loeb, vts, sos)
"Tasted 21 times since 1958 when I noted it as 'fine smooth. Fullest and darkest'. Still fairly deep and intense; beautiful bouquet, lovely fruit, scented, citrus, vanilla; sweet, full-bodied, powerful yet perfect flavour and balance with glorious blackberry-like ripeness." Broadbent

Roy, there are some interesting things there, but I didn't buy anything. Also, if you look at it carefully, you'll figure out that these are the leftovers from a listing that both you and I sent out back in May:

The "Remittance 1816" looked mighty interesting, but too rich for my blood right now...

"bn, sos, cc"

I think that "bn" stands for "base of the neck". What do the other two abbreviations stand for?

I really must find my decoder ring.

Thanks in advance,

Signs of seepage and, I believe, cracked capsule.

While we're deciphering abbreviations, what do "hwsl" and "crc" stand for?

I think it means Heavy Wine Stained Label (hwsl).
