A Fabulous Array of Port & Madeira Offered - HURRY

Post by Roy Hersh »

Dear Oenophile,

We are thrilled to have acquired a fabulous cellar of Churchill Ports in good quantity. I asked my old friend and highly respected Port expert, Roy Hersh, for his thoughts on these wines, and here is what he had to say, below. Roy is the proprietor and founder of For The Love Of Port, which any drinker/collector at any level should have in their arsenal of information. It can be found online at http://www.fortheloveofport.com - an absolute must for the Port and dessert/aperitif wine enthusiast. ---Stefan

"Churchill’s has been around since the early 1980s, when Johnny Graham married a descendent of Winston Churchill, 1981 to be exact. His family had been the owners of the renowned Port Shipper, W&J Graham’s, which they wound up selling to the Symington Family back in 1970. Johnny had worked his way up to director level of Cockburn’s and even consulted for Taylor’s until he set up Churchill Graham Lda., although he was unable to use his family surname for his Port and instead utilized his wife’s family name, which brought instant name recognition along with it. And that in a nut shell is how Churchill’s Port was born.

Things have progressed dramatically in the past 28 years, as has the overall quality of the Ports produced by Johnny Graham. Early on, grapes were purchased from the fine property of Quinta da Agua Alta. Those early Churchill Ports were crafted in a rustic, elegant and earthy style, capable of aging very nicely. In more recent years, a troika of Quintas were purchased, the most notable of which is Quinta da Gricha, which maintains over 100 hectares and produces some outstanding Vintage Ports these days.

Johnny Graham has taken things to a new level and the quality continues to improve across the board from their LBV and 10 year old Tawny Port, to the delicious White Port (my personal favorite of the genre), to the old Crusted and especially the Vintage Ports, the hallmark of this producer. The table wines are also very solid, but for now, I’ll stay focused on the Ports.

I have taken a look at the pricing that Stefan is offering on these Vintage Ports and don’t know how he can do it. All I can tell you is that at these prices, buying the Churchill Vintage Ports is an absolute no-brainer. Most of these Vintage Ports are ready to drink now and won’t require much cellaring although from 1994 and younger, they will reward patience or deliver loads of drinking pleasure as well."

Not only wonderful prices, but they were culled from a private cellar and the company that is selling them is the only one I trust as much as The Rare Wine Co. to do this type of work.

As a relative newby, I could use a translation guide.

I have tentatively equated sos to Signs of Seepage, but most of the other notes escape me.
