10 Year Old White Port by Andresen

10 Year Old White Port by Andresen (bottled 2008)

Sunday night Alex R. double blinded Cris and I with this one. Cris is learning Port quite well since he correctly guessed this was some kind of White Port. Lots of honey and citrus dominate the nose yet the underlying candied pecans give this very attractive aromas. Full bodied palate with some smokiness, cracked white pepper, and orange peel dominating the palate. There is a touch of heat to this, but in a good way, and lots of acidity that keeps it from being to syrupy. The only detractor to this very nice aged White Port was a short finish, which I had to dock several points as a results. Even with the short finish, this is still one of the better 10 Year Old White Ports I've had to date.

Thanks Andy, how would you compare this one to the Niepoort version?

I don't get to see Andresen too often but it is a very solid company and I typically enjoy their Ports even though I haven't had all that many.

I have not had the Niepoort yet, and we didn't get to try it on the trip last year when we visited Napoles. As you know I really like these aged white Ports, so i do hope to be able to try the Niepoort 10 Year Old White Port sometime in the near future.

As for the Andresen, I don't see it too often around me either. Actually I can't recall ever seeing at stores around me. But if this bottle is any indication of their quality, I'd really like to try some other Ports from them.

I keep in touch with the owner on rare occasions and I'll see if they have a Lodge or tasting room in Vila Nova de Gaia, if you'd like to check it out during the Port Harvest Tour and do a tasting there?

When I did a quick first read I thought you were joking about the lodge thing...being Niepoort that is [dash1.gif]

I'll shoot you an email.
