Yet another bottle from the FTLOP-direct opPORTunity.
Kopke 40 Year Old Tawny Port
Color: Dark tawny, more brown than even orange. It looks old, as it should.
Nose: Somewhat subdued. Tangy apricots, some alcohol, vanilla, and light dry oak. Maybe a little dust, too.
Palate: Luscious butterscotch, caramel, dried apricots, faint cinnamon, Christmas spices, faint almond paste. Perhaps some molasses.
Finish: Very rich and long. Very slight bite near the beginning, but all good from there on. Echos of the palate, plus some oak and creme brulee. At least a minute in length... it just lingers forever.
Score: 97 points. Stellar as usual, but this bottle seems a little more complex than usual. It also isn't quite as acidic as the Kopke 40-yr old can sometimes be, which to me is a big plus. It normally borders on too acidic, but this one is perfectly balanced!

Um hmm ... you waited for me to get out of town before opening this one. Ok, I get the hint.
I love this wine. At the "insider" price ... I still can't believe I let those pass by, but was cash poor at that moment.

Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com
