Purchased for the ridiculously low price of $19/bottle from Vinopolis in Oregon.
Quinta do Portal 20 Year Old Tawny Port
bottled 2008
Color: Pretty standard 20-yr old tawny color. Still contains some red, but very clearly an aged tawny.
Nose: Very faint VA - just enough to give the alcohol a high, soft tone. Something floral, perhaps honeysuckle? Soft, sweet apricot. Also some straw/dust. Faint and unidentifiable Christmas-like spices.
Palate: Full and somewhat dark, with a faint tone of very slightly burnt sugar. Good acidity, but without overpowering citrus. Still, some nice tart apricot and some faint blood orange. In many ways, it reminds me of a Moreira - it just feels like it's going to need a few days to open up. (Unlike a Moreira, however, it only needed 3-4 days and then started downhill rapidly. I'd say give it 48 hours then drink up quickly.)
Finish: a bit of an edge, good warmth, and a simple sweetness. Medium long length. Tails off with some grape stem/sour apple and a faint but very harsh note.
Score: 91 pts. Crazy good QPR.
