1994 Martinez Vintage Port

Post by Rune EG »

This was the 5th out of six bottles that I purchased in London, U.K., back in 1998. The first two were consumed 1998 and 2000, and I enjoyed them a lot. Then the 3rd and 4th which were consumed in 2003 and 2007 gave me disappointments (still good but not fantastic), but at that time I was not sufficiently aware of the “closed period” of a vintage port. But now the port is back on track! Having waited more than 3.5 years since the previous bottle it was time for testing and drinking, and Emmy and I enjoyed every drop consumed over two evenings.

Bottle decanted for 2 hours for the first half, then 26 hours for the second half. Main difference was that the alcohol was less evident after 26 hours. Darker ruby colour with a light rim, and a touch of brown starting to show. Nose of quite fresh caramelized apple. Well balanced, round, full body, still a lot of fruit, in the beginning very soft and then exploding in the mouth. Some bitterness towards the end, and with a long finish.
92 pts.

So the question is now, when should I open the 6th and last bottle?
