1960 Croft Vintage Port

Post by Tom D. »

Saturday, November 20, 2010 - Believed Oporto-bottled. Base neck fill, original embossed wax capsule, nice clean cork. This showed best after a good 10 hours in the decanter. Pretty garnet-ruby color. Nose shows ample red berry, cherry, some alcohol, with a slight prunishness. Nice depth on the palate, adding licorice and caramel to the sweet fruit. Alcohol comes forward through the medium-long finish. Overall, a very lively and pleasant showing for the only birth year wine in my cellar. 90 points.

Tom,
Do you see this continuing to improve with age, or do you think it's reached its peak plateau?

Andy, I'd say it will continue to develop, but for my palate it may not necessarily improve. This bottle was in a pretty nice place, already showing some secondary development, but retaining a nice kiss of fruit and a certain freshness. I can only see it slipping toward a more generic tawny character with further aging. And while it was not at all thin, I would also fear the already borderline spirit taking charge in time. That said, I would gladly buy a couple more bottles if I could find any. But it appears 50-year wines have been selling out quickly at most suppliers...
