1983 Ramos Pinto Vintage Port

Post by Rune EG »

This is the blend version. Cork broke into two pieces (one left in the bottle). Decanted 5 hours. Dark red colour with a slight indication of brown. Deep intense aroma of dark berries, caramel and very little alcohol (after decanting). Medium body. In spite of being powerful and quite intense in the mouth, the alcohol is subdued (which is good). Tannins at a rather smooth level. Medium to long finish. A solid vintage port which probably should be consumed from now and onwards 2-4 years. Slightly disappointed with this bottle, as at the FTLOP Harvest Tour Oct 2010 we tasted a 1983 blend at the quinta (although from a magnum), that was better. Felt that something was missing. However, I have purchased many bottles, so I will revert with other impressions. 88 pts.

That's too bad, because as you said the magnum we had at Quinta da Ervamoira was excellent. I marked down "Buy!" in the margin of my tasting note but I haven't been able to acquire any yet.

I hope the rest of your bottles show better!

I want to pick up some magnums but never heard back whether they are available or not. Heck any Ramos Pinto magnums would be a welcome addition, but no luck hearing from anyone who'd like to sell me some... [help.gif]

Hi Moses!

When I came home from the Harvest Tour I pushed the importer quite a lot to bring in the 1983 Ramos Pinto vintage. It was not on the list netiher on the Wine Monopoly nor in the importers plans. There are many years ago last time 1983 VP from RP was available here.

After some negotiations they brought in two cases for me (together with their other their December / Christmas import from RP). I do not know whether they brought in other bottles for the general market. I only purchased regular size bottles. May be you could try the same procedure towards the RP-importer in the US?
