2007 Periquita Reserva, J.M. da Fonseca, 13%
This is a delightful medium-bodied wine that is modern in it's up-front fruit but holds on to some of its traditional qualities. It is made from Castelao, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Franca.
●The colour is a bright but medium ruby red with a hint of purple at the rim. Despite the lighter colour there is a good amount of viscosity with tears forming on the glass.
●The nose is open, fresh, and floral; it reeks of sweet berry fruit, followed by a spicy minerality coupled with a hint of oak.
●In the mouth it is lighter styled but fresh and juicy, with sweet fruit immediacy followed by cherry-skin, a bit of cinnamon and spice, light oak, and a crisp astringent finish. It's not terribly long but has a savoury, refreshing finish.
This wine is relatively new and falls between the regular Periquita and the top-rung Periquita Classico. I might have preferred the wine to be less modern as I have alway liked the Periquita and, more so, the brilliant Periquita Classico which ages beautifully. However it is still a wine with a lot of character.
Cheers..................Mahmoud.
