TN: 2007 Quinta Vale D. Maria Douro Red

Post by Tom D. »

Purple-tinged black cherry color. Fairly tight nose offers slate and a bit of wood. This unfolded considerably on the palate, with good structure, simple but very pleasant fruit, good acidity, and a shortish and slightly stemmy finish. This should develop and open up over the next several years, but its freshness, structure and balance actually make for quite fine current drinking with a lengthy decant. The 14.5% alcohol is reasonably in check for now. 91 points. 1/22/2011

Tom,
They make some really good Douro wines and I just wish they were a little easier to find around me. Have you had many of their Douro wines, or was this one of your first experiences with them?

Thanks Tom for your Tasting Note.
The Vale D. Maria-bottles are not so often available here in Norway, but I have wanted to buy some.
After reading your Tasting Note I decided to hunt for them.
There are two wine monopoly shops in Norway (Oslo and Bergen) that have a lot differant of special wines in smaller quantities, but so far not listed on their web pages. Found that the Oslo-shop have six bottles left, and I decided to purchase all of them.
This vintage is also available in magnums. Normally that price should be double, or slightly less than double, but in this case it is double plus another 40 %. So I will taste one before thinking about the magnum.
