What Port will you open at Thanksgiving?
Time to open that special bottle. Have you decided which it is going to be?

2003 Quinta do Vesuvio VP. Not because it will be in its prime--in fact it might be a bit closed up. But last year at Thanksgiving our doberman Guinness had surgery for lung cancer. We stayed with friends in Ft. Collins while she was in the hospital. Stopping in a wine shop to pick out wine for our friends, we saw the 2003 QdV and Marijke got it as a gift for me. Guinness is still with us, so its seems fitting to open it to celebrate while we give thanks.

Glad to hear it!Eric Menchen wrote:Guinness is still with us, so its seems fitting to open it to celebrate while we give thanks.

I will probably open a 1970 Taylor for Thanksgiving this year. That's the variable - one or more of my 40-yr olds is guaranteed!

Very glad to hear about your dog. Considering it will be a small gathering this year and there won't be many wine drinkers there, I may pass on opening a Port and just keep it to a bottle or maybe two of red (and/or white) wines.

Re: What Port will you open at Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving isn't a day when we celebrate anything in particular here in the UK and as I have a long early morning drive the following day I will probably not have any Port that night. But, given the circumstances, I might pop open a can of Draught Guinness

We're spending a casual Thanksgiving with a good friend who is also a big Port fan so I'll probably open up a bottle of Warre's Warrior as well as a bottle of Noval Black.

I'm thinking about the demise of 1994 Quarles Harris
Re: What Port will you open at Thanksgiving?
I hope it shows as well as did our Quarles Harris 1977 consumed earlier tonight. If so, you are in for a fine discovery. Enjoy your Turkey and QH94, Kurt!

We're having a small group of friends over (6 total) I have a bottle of kopke colheita 1981 ready to go. I love that year. Let's see if that idea is shared!
Re: What Port will you open at Thanksgiving?
Happy Thanksgiving to those that celebrate the holiday and for those that don't, find a reason to give thanks too.

We also opened a Kirkland 10 Year Old & a Quarles Harris 10 Year Old for a little impromptu comparison.

Re: What Port will you open at Thanksgiving?
The Quarles Harris was by far the better of the two. For whatever reason, the Kirkland seemed quite a bit sweeter than bottles I've had in the past. Nevertheless, the QH was much more complex and the finish was noticeably longer than the Kirkland. Given that the price point for these wines is virtually identical I'd lean towards picking up more of the Quarles as a nice everyday drinker.Andy Velebil wrote:How'd they compare?Marc J. wrote:We also opened a Kirkland 10 Year Old & a Quarles Harris 10 Year Old for a little impromptu comparison.
