TN: 2007 Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo Grande Reserva Touriga Nacional Douro red

Post by Rune EG »

Tasted first time at Quinta Nova as part of FTLOP Harvest Tour 2011. Liked it at that time and purchased a bottle to bring home.

Decanted 1.5 hrs. Dark red with a light rim. Fresh aroma of berries and oak, and also deep complex with some spices. The taste is super-elegant, but still with sufficient power. Full body. Quite tough towards the end, when the tannins are showing significantly (incl. actually hints of coffee and chocolate). Very long aftertaste. With less tannins it would have been one or two points higher, but still very good. 94 pts.

Rune, have you had a Touriga Nacional bottle from the Douro that was not above 90 points? All of the TN wines I have ever had from the Douro were favorable to me.

Recently I have had four Touriga Nacional Douro reds:
Vallado, Quinta Nova, Quinta da Pedra Alta (will post tasting note soon) and the Crasto.
They are all in the 90s.
Earlier this year Quinta do Cachao TN also very good.

However, from Beiras I had a Joao Pato TN that was not my style. Although he calls it Touriga Nacional, it was 85 % TN and 15 % Baga.

I will continue to buy Touriga Nacionals from Douro, as I cannot remember to have had a bad experience.
