1963 Casa do Douro Colheita Port

Post by Al B. »

Decant: Pop 'n' pour - A sample from Axel Probst. Deep brown, the colour of a solution of burnt sugar. Very strong on the nose, a touch of rancid butter and lots of dates; not attractive. Full of flavour in the mouth, lots of burnt sugar but with a strong offsetting acidity; thick in texture, with a harshness from the burnt sugar. Pleasant in a way. Swallowing releases a huge and painful burst of acidity, but then a long and fully-flavoured finish takes over and dominates the senses with gusto forcing thoughts of fresh roast coffee beans and burnt toffee into mind. Overall, this is not a wine I would seek out and buy, but is probably an excellent wine to have on hand when blending because of its immense acidity and very long finish. 83 points
