$55 is a disingenuous price being mentioned. What looks like a bargain, often isn't. The price it is sold at on sale @ WTSO is about what it should go for regularly.

That said, it is a truly stellar version of the Vinha Velha by Qta do Crasto! [notworthy.gif]

I pretty much always ignore the "Original" price on WTSO. I do look at the "Yesterday's Best Web," compare with my wine-searcher.com subscription, and compare against my own historical notes if I can. Then I take into account that the WTSO price includes shipping.

Given what I've seen from WTSO over the years, my guess is that $55 is probably the MSRP equivalent. It's no more disingenuous than any other "sale" price that you see advertised, as it seems like few products actually sell for their MSRP these days.

Eric's method is similar to mine. I spot check WTSO every so often to see how their "yesterday's internet price" jives with winesearcher.com. I used to check every bottle I bought from them, but they are consistently less expensive than winesearcher.com so I only check once in a while now. Sometimes they're only cheaper by a buck or two, but then on top of that WTSO has free shipping! [yahoo.gif]

My point was not made clearly. When at Crasto during the 2011 Port Harvest Tour, Miguel was very clear what the MSRP was going to be for the 2009 and this is WAY above what we were told. He understands the landed price and taxes to the importer and then can easily figure what the SRP should be and $55 is significantly out of line. Of course retailers are free to charge what they will, but here was a case where the producer was going to ensure that the price of one of his most valuable commodities was to be priced in line with his expectations and he was adamant the price would be lower than other recent vintages in the USA.

Others on the trip enjoyed hearing that the prices would actually be lower on this particular bottling of 2009 Reserva, given the percentage of VdP and VMT that were being declassified into this cuvee. It was a no-brainer to procure two cases of this excellent juice. I considered a third case, but bought lots of other Crasto high end juice from 2009, arguably one of their greatest vintages to date.

Heck, even the basic Crasto Douro red, is a steal from a QPR standpoint, given its remarkable balance and structure.
