1967 Fauchon Colheita Port

Post by Andy Velebil »

There was no bottling date on this but in doing some research this was a BOB for Fauchon, a chain-type store in France, and produced by Warre's & Co. It is believed to have been produced sometime in the late 1970's or 1980's, but possible up to the mid 1990's. Based on how old the t-cork was and the condition of it when I pulled it, I'd put it closer to being bottled in the late 1970's or very early 1980's.

Still a clear cola with orange and red highlights. It was hard to pin this down as it was continually changing flavors with each taste. When first opened this had a hollow spot late on the palate, which with more air time filled in nicely. One thing that didn't change was the searing acidity this possessed across the entire palate and finish. Ever changing but no shortage of hazelnuts, nutmeg, cinnamon, lots of spices, smoke, old wood varnish, marzipan, orange peel, citrus, mahogany, and vanilla to mention some of the more prominent flavors. The complexity of this is pretty amazing and the best $50 I've spent on a bottle in a long time. A real treat!

Sounds great! What a find! Thanks for the TN. Have you tasted any other wines under the Fauchon label?

Interesting, I've never heard of the store, but love running into old bottles of intriguing Colheitas and/or LBV like that.

Any chance for a picture of the label? I'm just curious.

I did happen to save it and not toss it yet. I'll get a pic up tomorrow night.

Here's a pic of the bottle. A cool old style "dumpy" bottle.

I believe Fauchon is one of the French hypermarkets (sort of like a Walmart with a better food department). Most usually have an annual wine sale were some good bargins are obtained.
