2005 Niepoort Vintage Port

Post by Andy Velebil »

The palate of this is so much fresher than the ripe 2003. Big elegant fruit, waves of tannins, plums, cigar, and full throttle everything. A spectacularly long finish rounds out a powerhouse of a Port.

Hey Andy,

How long of a decant did you give this. I had a bottle yesterday (only one hour decant) and it wasn't showing much love. Shows promise, but it was stern and dryish on the palate, with the tannins obscuring much the fruit.

IIRC it was about 5 hours and this was from a .375ml bottle.

BTW, I drank this over 3 days and it did improve, with the fruit more forthcoming over day 2 and 3.

Marco, what would you rate this VP?

For this particular bottle, I scored it 91, noting that it may not be the best time to sample it at the moment. I hope it evolves as wonderfully as Dirk seems to think it will.
