Classic Vintage Port
in Rare Half Bottles
1983 Gould Campbell
DESSERT WINES JUST make sense in half bottles. And it's as true for Vintage Port as it for Sauternes.
So, since the day we opened our doors, half bottles of Vintage Port have always been high on our shopping list. The problem has been finding them.
In the past, we solved the problem by stocking up on half bottles when the Vintage Ports were first released in their third year. While others were stocking up on 5 or 10 cases of Fonseca or Taylor in bottle, we were buying the same number of cases of halves.
But since we stopped buying and selling young Port about a decade ago, we've found it painfully difficult to acquire half bottles. The producers make far too few (in our opinion), and mature half bottles rarely reappear on the market. Because of their useful size, their owners would much rather drink them than sell them.
And so, we're thrilled today to offer a beautiful parcel of 1983 Gould Campbell in half bottles, in stock and ready to ship for the fall.
An All-Time Sleeper
In its 215 years of making Port, the venerable house of Gould Campbell has managed to remain largely under the radar. But every few vintages, it turns out a Vintage Port that rattles Oporto with its greatness. It happened in 1977, and then again in 1983 and 1985. In fact, if any period in its recent history can be viewed as Gould Campbell's "Golden Age," it's 1977-1985.
Last May, we offered a parcel of 1983 and 1985 Gould Campbell in bottles, which sold out in a heartbeat at seriously low prices.
Today's parcel of '83 half bottles is from the same source: an old friend in the business who'd squirreled away a significant stock of Gould Campbell in the 1980s. As was the case with the '83 and '85 bottles, we were able to buy these '83 halves at a price that's litte more than we would have paid 15 years ago. And the cellarage has been perfect.
This is a great opportunity but also a very limited one. Hurry.

"...Extremely dark purplish-magenta. Inviting notes of mocha, boysenberry and lavender ... It is youthful, approachable and a stunning nearly 30 year old VP that is drinking like a teenager. From the sublime silky-smooth texture, to the incredible balance and structure, this is a wonderful 1983 which I've always admired and bought lots of ... Big, ripe, sweet blackberry and boysenberry brambly flavors are sublime and still quite primary. The finish ... is a mistake in nomenclature."
