2007 Niepoort LBV

Post by Eric Menchen »

A very generous by the glass pour at La Taverna del Bisbe in Barcelona (€5.50). I saw the waiter open the bottle, so this was fresh with no air time. In addition, the bottle had been chilled, which we countered by warming our glasses in our hands.

Aromas started with anise and cherry cough syrup, later supplemented by light tar, red berry fruit (strawberry?), and a little dried leaf and mint. Very full in the mouth with deep fruit. Most of the aromas carried into the flavor. Decent acid tang and mild tannins. Medium finish.

My score is likely biased by environmental factors, but I was thinking 93 points at first. Let's go with 92-93 points.

Saw the bottle the next day. I believe this was in fact 2007. Menu said 2004, bottle said 2007.

Ah....you got my hopes up!

I purchased a 6-pack of the 04 LBV a couple of years ago to avoid killing off my last few of the 03 vintage - the first two bottles ended up poured down the drain mostly un-drunk and i'd basically written the others off as a bad purchase. They're in long term storage now....hopefully by the time i come back they've turned into a swan!
