1977 Fonseca Vintage Port

Post by Glenn E. »

From David Spriggs' 50th birthday party at Roy's house. My palate still seemed to be a little off, but not nearly as badly as it was on Saturday night for the FTLOP 5th Anniversary party.

1977 Fonseca Vintage Port
9 hours decant time

Color: Deep red, some bricking. Given its reputation I was expecting some purple.
Nose: Ripe strawberry, rich sugar, some alcohol.
Palate: Full and very rich. Good tannins, okay acidity. Very impressive. Raspberry, ripe strawberry. Wonderful.
Finish: Long and even. Good heat, nice tannins and eventually apple skin. Extraordinary.

Score: 97 points. Magnificent - this one's a keeper. I'm not sure I understand Suckling's 100-point score for it, but perhaps he just had a stellar bottle.
