40 Year Old Tawny Port by Quinta da Romaneira

Post by Steven Kooij »

Quinta da Romaneira NV “Over 40 Years Old” Tawny Port (bottled 2004). Apparently, the 1935 vintage is used for 50% of the blend, with younger vintages used to freshen things up. 21% alcohol.

A dark mahogany colour, fading to yellow and colourless on the rim. Not very outspoken on the nose. No noticeable alcohol. Some roasted hazelnuts, some dried fruit (more citrus than dark fruits) and something close to roses.
Big bodied and medium sweet. Very rich. Somewhat spicy at first, becoming smoother with more time in the mouth – creamy chocolate, dried figs.
Finish of exceptional length, and fresher than the palate would suggest. It possesses a light bitterness (nice) but remains a bit hot throughout (pity). 93 points.

I tried this in a Port bar in Porto; it was 19 Euros a glass, or 130 Euros a bottle.

Well Steven, I think that you have tasted the Quinta da Romaneira “Over 40 Years Old” Tawny Port in Vinologia Portwine House, since then the price of the glass now is for 25€ and the price of the bottle is for 199€, because unfortanelly the State was sold to AXA, they transformed the facilities in a 5* Hotel, and now they only make VP and table wine, and because we are speaking about a property with 400 hec, they sell the grapes for Noval.
The wonderfull old colheitas from 67 and 70 and the unic (in my opinion, of course) Over 40y old, are now out of production :wall: , and we only have 7 bottles remaining  .
Afther that we have to find wich 40y should be elected as our favourite :help:

I love the Romaneira 40 year old and have had it only about 4x, all at Vinologia, of course.

Other favorites 40 year olds are Taylor's, Noval, Sandeman, Dow, Graham and Fonseca ... and I need to try the Kopke again.
Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com
